In this crucial hour when not only Americans but all peoples of all nations collectively are faced with the catastrophic effects of the most expansive economic collapse in the annals of human history, it is calming, comforting, and cheering to know that the Sovereign and Almighty God has a plan, has eternally known what the plan is, and that His plan—for individual believers and His true Body alike—is not for harm, calamity, disaster, or destruction, but welfare, good, prosperity, peace, and a hope-filled future.

‘For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.’ (Jer. 29:11, NASB)

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Ibid; NIV)

For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome. (Ibid; AB)

For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. (Ibid; NLT)

In the present tumultuous times in which talk of crisis, collapse, and calamity fill the air and images vividly portraying same fill our television screens, it is vital for believers to understand one thing—God has a plan. He’s always had a plan. In fact it is not just a plan, rather His plan is THE plan. The various translations of this oft-quoted verse cited above reflect some poignant points concerning the plans that He has for us.

First, it’s thrilling to just know that the Almighty has a plan for our welfare and well-being—that a plan actually exists. How often do people—believers and non-believers alike—languish in life for lack of a plan and because they don’t know what God’s plan is! One of the most pitiful divine laments in the Word of God is: “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hos. 4:6). In other words, those who profess to be God’s people and wear the badge—“Christian”—don’t know that God has always had a specifically and intentionally devised plan for their life, and they have no clue what that plan is.

Many don’t know where they’re going, nor how to get to wherever it is they are going. As someone has said, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there.”

Lack of knowledge or ignorance of God’s plans for us is not just a “bummer,” as people say today, but it will cause you to live a defeated and destroyed life. Myriad are the professing Christians living lives of devastation and destruction due to ignorance of God’s plans, pledges, and promises for them.

Secondly, God says He knows the plans He has for us. Just the knowledge that He already knows the plans He has for us should be extremely comforting, calming, and cheering to us in the troubled and tribulation-filled times comprising our current collective life as Americans here in the fall of 2008, as the world reels in the wake of ubiquitous financial devastation for which there are no ready remedies.

Thirdly, the plans God has for us, by His own pronouncement, are NOT for calamity, disaster, devastation, or evil, but on the contrary for our welfare, good, prosperity, peace, and to give us hope and a hopeful future. Again, if there’s ever been a time a plan that will engender all those results is needed, especially hope and a hopeful future, it is now!

Yet, the stark reality at this present hour is that the scenario before us as a nation appears to be completely antithetical to what God declares concerning “the plan” He has for His people. Over the last few days the economy of the world’s greatest super-power has been officially, albeit reluctantly, diagnosed by the economic experts and the politicians charged with overseeing and managing it, as “collapsed”—in unprecedented, historic proportions. Our national economy lies listless on a blood-soaked gurney on life-support in the ICU. The team of highly-skilled ER physicians have signified with the familiar side-to-side swivel of their heads that at this point there’s nothing much they can do for the dying patient but provide comfort. And, since believers, though not of the world, are in the world, they are impacted much the same in the natural as the rest of the world.

The financial “fall” long predicted by a number of prophetic voices over the last two decades finally became an undeniable reality on Rosh HaShana, New Years Day for the year 5769 on the Hebrew calendar, signaled by the most precipitous one-day decline ever recorded on Wall Street with the leading stock market index plummeting precisely 777 points—a mark that surely is a divine signature. “Black Monday 2.0.” “The Super-Fall in the Fall 2008,” it could be dubbed. Humpty-Dumpty has fallen off the wall, and all the king’s horses and all the king’s men it now appears are incapable of putting Humpty-Dumpty back together again.

Virtually all of the longest standing financial institutions heretofore forming the economic foundations of the greatest nation ever to exist in the history of the world have totally collapsed; many literally are no more. The highest, mightiest, and smartest of our republic are totally bankrupt of credible answers and viable solutions. The nation’s most powerful and highly positioned government leaders cannot even begin to account for either the genesis or the denouement of the most immense national debacle in time immemorial. The most brilliant economic and political minds of the free world are totally stymied by the sheer scale of the dilemma and basically unable to offer a stunned and reeling American citizenry any plausible strategy for resolution and recovery. All that the entirety of Washington can offer is some hastily-devised dubious and purely speculative proposals that in effect transfer the retributive burden for the sins of the true offenders onto the collective back of the present generation of Americans, to bear for the whole of their and their children’s children’s lifetimes.

The cause, of course, we know with absolute certainty. Basic greed, bare avarice, and brazen aggrandizement are the uncontested and undeniable motivators. That—we all know. No debate needed in that regard. The proverbial chickens have come home to roost, and barring divine intervention the people of “the land of the free” will be suffering the wages that inure to those who foolishly disregard the biblical adage concerning the borrower becoming the slave of the lender. Unless and until Americans return to Biblical principles regarding financial integrity and morality, we will remain incarcerated in a debtors prison, where one of the horrible consequences is forfeiture of common human freedom and the freedoms we as the most prosperous nation on earth have enjoyed for well over two-hundred years.

For decades our national adversaries have well known and implemented strategies based on the understanding that there is no need for them to resort to expending massive amounts of their resources on a military aggression against “the great Satan,” when they can use American resources to bring the nation to its knees through economic and entrepreneurial exploitation of our national Achilles Heel—materialism, and more specifically the ills that unrestrained and pandemic avarice produce. The unfortunate result of decades of moral decline and spiritual apostasy in this country is that our gates are now overrun and our nation is overflowing with mortal enemies filled with venomous enmity.

What is critical for the true Church—the Church Jesus is building, the Remnant Church—to recognize in the face of current events, the presidential race in particular, is that, though the matter of what candidate and political party prevails in the election will certainly affect us all, nevertheless, our destiny does not rise and fall on who is president and vice president of the United States. Bona fide believers, one and all, cast their vote for the ultimate Commander-in-chief the day they accepted the risen Christ as their personal Lord and Savior! The Born Again Child of God can take solace in the fact that Jesus is Lord over all and has been permanently given a Name which is above every other Name—on earth and in heaven.

In a sense, so far as our own life is concerned, each of us are electors of the supreme electoral college that does not convene every four years for a new election, but once and for all. For those of us who by virtue of the New Birth have been become members of the Holy Race, earthly political races are of only minor consequence. We are IN this world, but we are not OF this world. The world’s systems and kingdoms are not the system and kingdom in which we operate. Oh our natural lives are surely affected by the earthly systems and kingdoms, but we are preeminently spirit-beings operating in the system of the Spirit—the kingdom of Christ—which cannot be seen with natural sight. Thus, we must ensure that we not limit ourselves or consign our destiny to the natural systems of this world, but rather seek to effectually function in the Spirit realm on a daily basis.

When compared with Jesus’ explicit description in His didactic discourses unto His contemporary disciples of “the last days,” can the current tribulation-filled times possibly not be the manifestation in earnest of His preternatural predictions (see Mat. 23; et al.)? I think not. Are these the times concerning which Jesus said, when you see these things taking place, LOOK UP, for your redemption draweth nigh? I think so. Are there those among us who seriously believed, say thirty years ago, that theirs would be the generation who would experience these scriptural predictions? I think not many.

Yet are the events that produced the present circumstances part of the Divine Plan of which I speak—meaning, did God orchestrate them? The answer is a resounding “No!”

Succinctly stated, God gave dominion of the earth to man, namely Adam and Eve, but Satan wrested it from man in the Garden of Eden through the aegis of man’s fall into perdition. “The heavens are the Lord’s, but the earth he has given unto the sons of men.” In Jesus, the Second Adam, God sent the Kinsman Redeemer and Prototype to generate Redeemed Mankind, the Holy Race, but it is now up to that Holy Race, the Church, Christ’s Betrothed, to wrest dominion back from Satan’s control. That is the Church’s ultimate mission, and heaven shall retain Christ until that mission is fully accomplished and all things are restored, at which time He will return to claim the Church as His Eternal Bride.

Clear and plain, Mankind—unredeemed humanity—in cooperation and collaboration with Satan, “the ruler of this world,” “the prince of the power of the air,” is responsible for the present circumstances. Man, operating through the aegis of the powers and principles of the kingdoms of this world, which are under the sway of the original rebel, Satan, has produced these circumstances.

Indeed all this is what makes the fact that God has an eternal plan that holds the welfare and prosperity of His People, the Remnant Church, in the midst of global tribulation, so indescribably magnificent.

As I said at the beginning, God clearly and unequivocally declares in the verse cited at the beginning that, one, He knows the plans He has for us, and, two, those plans are NOT for calamity, disaster, or evil, but rather for our welfare, good, prosperity, peace, and a hopeful and blessed future.

God knows the plans He has for us, but there are some things we need to know and understand concerning His plans for us, however—things that even His people, His Body, the Church, His betrothed, often, unfortunately and to their detriment, do not understand. As He says in His Word, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hos. 4:6). Now we know and have little problem assimilating that the unbelieving people of the world are destroyed and live decimated for lack of knowledge or spiritual understanding. That is pretty much a given. But, the lament of God through His prophet Hosea in this verse is that God’s people—what today is Born Again Children of God—are destroyed and experience destruction in their lives, needlessly, due to their lack of knowledge concerning God and His Kingdom.

It is what we don’t know that allows destruction to invade and oftentimes prevail in our lives. It is not—as the world, the occult, and the New Agers erroneously proclaim—“the truth” that sets us free. That is a misquote and twisting of Scripture. Jesus never said that. Rather, He said it is the truth of His Word that we KNOW from abiding in His Word that sets us free, and the ones the Truth sets free is not everyone and anyone, but rather only His disciples (John 8:31,32)! The obverse of that adage holds true as well, however: the fact that what we do not know of the Truth precludes our liberation and permits our bondage and slavery to continue.

So there are some things we desperately need to know about the plans that God has for us, which we will look at in the next edition of this article. But, the most important thing of all to understand in the interim is that God has a plan and knows exactly what that plan is, and how He is going to implement it. In fact, everything is right on plan, despite what we see and hear going on in our world today. So there is no need whatsoever for the true believer to despair or become dispirited at all. Yes, the kingdoms of this world are being shaken to their core, but we have a kingdom that cannot be shaken.

Moreover, the True Remnant Church that Jesus is and has been building for two millennia should be rejoicing, and again I say, rejoicing, at the events and circumstances transpiring at this time, because (this much I will share in this edition regarding what the Lord has shown me) where it is all leading is the most monumental transference of wealth and earthly means in human history.

But, hear this, and hear it good, this massive transfer will be only unto the proven righteous, the third part remnant who have been tested as gold is tested in the fiery furnace, refined as silver is refined (Zech. 13:8,9). God will get it TO these, because He knows He can get it THROUGH them to fulfill His purposes and plans the ultimate end of which is the glorification of the Bride:

Haggai 2:5-9
‘As for the promise which I made you when you came out of Egypt, My Spirit is abiding in your midst; do not fear!’
“For thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘Once more in a little while, I am going to shake the heavens and the earth, the sea also and the dry land.
‘I will shake all the nations; and they will come with the wealth of all nations, and I will fill this house with glory,’ says the Lord of hosts.
‘The silver is Mine and the gold is Mine,’ declares the Lord of hosts.
The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former,’ says the Lord of hosts, ‘and in this place I will give peace,’ declares the Lord of hosts.”

God has a plan, and He knows what that plan is, but even more exhilarating is that He promises to reveal those plans to us, His Children, through the Spirit:

But, on the contrary, as the Scripture says, What eye has not seen and ear has not heard and has not entered into the heart of man, [all that] God has prepared (made and keeps ready) for those who love Him who hold Him in affectionate reverence, promptly obeying Him and gratefully recognizing the benefits He has bestowed]. Yet to us God has unveiled and revealed them by and through His Spirit, for the [Holy] Spirit searches diligently, exploring and examining everything, even sounding the profound and bottomless things of God [the divine counsels and things hidden and beyond man’s scrutiny]. (1 Corinthians 2:9,10; AB)

As I stated on the previous post, I am convinced this whole matter I am discussing in these previous several posts is far from being a mere side-bar, but rather is a prophetic warning from God. I believe it is a critical Kingdom Matter that the Church must turn its attention to in order to be delivered from the dastardly and destructive spirit of mammon that now pervades the Church. Many individuals in the Church are obsessed with the spirit of materialism, and if they continue in their ways and in giving place to the devil, what is an obsession now, will continue to escalate and take more and more ground in their heart until materialism, the love of money, will totally possess them. Some who were once bona fide believers and members of the Body of Christ, have become apostate in their heart having yielded to the allure of purely material “wealth,” and as a result are already possessed by the spirit of mammon.

I believe the judgment that MUST begin with the household of God has begun, and will continue in the form of the economic collapse America and the nations of the world are facing. But, as I have written in so many words in so many of my writings, this judgment that God is bringing upon the Church precedent to the judgment He shall bring upon the world is a judgment of purification and refinement. It is a corrective and reproving judgment to purify the Lamb’s Wife for the imminent return of Christ to claim His Betrothed as His Eternal Bride and Helpmate suitable to partner with Him in the judgment of the nations in the Day of His Fierce Wrath.

The love of money, or covetousness, certainly is the root of all evil, and it causes a complete breach in one’s fellowship with God. Jesus said, “Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions” (Lk. 12:15). As we have already seen, Paul said those who have coveted riches, often “have wandered away from the faith, and pierced themselves with many a pang” (1 Tim. 6:10). Hence, we can see that covetousness and greed can most certainly cause a believer to “wander away from the faith,” that is, become apostate subsequent to salvation.

The Consequences of Covetousness
As Jesus said, no one can successfully serve two masters, God and money. He said that if you “love,” that is, attribute your affections to and expend the vast majority of your energies pursuing, money, you in effect “hate” God. As the Apostle John put it, “If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him” (1 Jn. 2:15).

“Out of touch,” irrational, and unduly harsh, these undeniably Biblical Truths are considered in this day when the pursuit of riches has come to be regarded as a wholly noble and honorable pursuit, and when Christians have become indoctrinated with the concept that materialistic obsession is even godly. Moreover, anyone who dares to preach such concepts is subjected to scorn, ridicule, and contempt. Christendom today, for the most part, has lost sight of or does not want to recognize the Truth that covetousness is still sin for which there is a penalty if it is not repented from. The unadulterated Truth is this: anyone who fails to repent of covetousness will ultimately end up out of fellowship with God, will be disqualified from Eternal Life, precluded from inheriting the Kingdom of God, and banished from Heaven unto eternal judgment. The following scriptures trumpet forth warnings to that effect:

Or do you not know that the unrighteous SHALL NOT INHERIT THE KINGDOM OF GOD? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor IDOLATORS, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor THE COVETOUS, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor SWINDLERS, SHALL INHERIT THE KINGDOM OF GOD. (1 Cor. 6:9,10)

For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or COVETOUS MAN, WHO IS AN IDOLATER, HAS AN INHERITANCE IN THE KINGDOM OF CHRIST AND GOD. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things THE WRATH OF GOD COMES UPON THE SONS OF DISOBEDIENCE. (Eph. 5:5, 6)

Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are:…IDOLATRY…of which I forewarn you just as I have forewarned you that THOSE WHO PRACTICE SUCH THINGS SHALL NOT INHERIT THE KINGDOM OF GOD. (Gal. 5:19‑21)

But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murders and immoral persons and sorcerers and IDOLATERS and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death. (Rev. 21:8)

Everyone should heed God’s warnings concerning the deceitfulness of riches and covetousness, including and especially believers, since it will most definitely choke the Word and prevent it from bringing forth fruit. Probably no warning in this regard is more poignant than the one Jesus issued through the medium of the parable of the rich fool:

And He said to them, “Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions.” And He told them a parable, saying, “The land of a certain rich man was very productive. And he began reasoning to himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?’ And he said, ‘This is what I will do; I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, ‘Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years to come; take your ease, eat, drink and be merry.’ But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what you have prepared?’ So is the man who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.” (Lk. 12:15‑21)

God called this man “a FOOL.” In his covetousness and greed he just stored up his goods, and as they increased, he merely built more barns to store up more goods. But, on the night his soul was required of him, he was spiritually bankrupt. He had stored up all his riches for himself, instead of being generous with it unto others in obedience to God. He was rich toward himself, but “not rich toward God.” God said to him, “You fool!”

The Word of God tells us to “give” (Lk. 6:38), not to “store up.” We are to be generous, giving to others who are in need and for the preaching of the Gospel. God Himself is generous, and is always giving. He gave the supreme gift of His only begotten Son, the best He had, to us for our salvation. A godly person, i.e., one who is like God, will also be a giving person. As a bonus, God says that whatever we give on behalf of Jesus unto the needy and for the sake of the preaching of the Gospel, will be returned to us in up to one‑hundredfold measure, NOW in this life and age, and in the age to come we will have the reward of Eternal Life (Mk. 10:29,30).

Jesus taught that the way to keep from being covetous and deluded by the deceitfulness of riches is to lay up our treasures in Heaven by giving on His behalf here on Earth. If we are covetous and greedily store up here on Earth instead, it will be constantly subjected to depletion by various forms of “thieves break(ing) in to steal” and economic modulation. If we are generous givers here on Earth, however, we will be storing up treasures in Heaven. But even greater than that, we will be demonstrating where our heart and what our “treasure” really is—things in Heaven, or things on the Earth:

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. (Mat. 6:19‑21)

Covetousness Not Exclusive to Rich
Having said all this concerning covetousness, it needs to be pointed out that there is a common misconception in this regard that covetousness is found exclusively among those who would be considered financially rich. But, that is a fallacy. You do not have to be rich to be covetous and caught up in the love of money. There are myriads with financial resources below the wealthy level who are covetous and deceived by the deceitfulness of riches. The fact is: there are many times more non‑wealthy people who harbor covetousness in their hearts than there are those who are rich and covetous.

The harsh truth is that their covetousness is often the very thing that keeps the poor reeling under the cruel curse of never‑ending poverty and financial lack. Sadly, the poor often stay poor because in their covetousness, or in some cases fear of lack, they never sow any financial seed, thereby precluding them from ever reaping a harvest. Those, on the other hand, who are generous givers, find the Law of Sowing and Reaping continually producing for them an abundant harvest that supplies their every need.

Summary
In bringing this series to a close, let me offer this summary concerning the second “thorn of worldliness.” Do not be deceived by the deceitfulness of riches. Place all your trust in God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. Riches will fail you; God will never fail you. Riches are temporal, and only indigenous to this life; Jesus Christ is the True Riches of Eternity. Do not seek riches, “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these THINGS shall be added to you” (Mat. 6:33).

It seems to me that the best attitude concerning riches one can adopt is found in the Proverbs of Solomon: “Do not worry yourself to gain wealth, cease from your consideration of it”; and, “Give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the good that is my portion” (Pr. 23:4; 30:8).

If we will seek the Kingdom and righteousness of God rather than riches, the Word of God will not be choked by the worldly “thorn” of “the deceitfulness of riches,” allowing it to produce the fruit of the Kingdom of God in our lives, that is, if we also remove from our lives the three thorns of worldliness Jesus warned about in the “Parable of the Sower. — “the desires for other things.” We examine that deadly thorn in the next chapter.[end]

The above is taken from a book I published in 1984 entitled, “The Mystery of the Kingdom.” Its message has turned out to be a timely prophetic message for every believer and the Church today. I urge you to read it. Click here for more information.

In the wake of the Grassley Investigation, which was the topic of my previous post, there are reports that the response of most of those ministries being probed is one of adamant denial and angry disputation. The investigation is focused on six prominent ministries: Benny Hinn, Kenneth and Gloria Copeland, David and Joyce Meyer; Randy and Paula White; Creflo and Taffi Dollar; and Eddie Long. Several of them are now publicizing their view that such an investigation by a government body is illegal, unjustified, and improperly intrusive, along with their vow to therefore resist and in some cases stonewall the Congressional committee’s inquiries.

I am neither judging nor condemning any of the persons or ministries named, such is not my purpose, and we are proscribed from doing so by Scripture. However, I do not believe that denial, disputation, and enmity in the public discourse is the right or the Biblical response for these high-profile ministries and ministers. As I indicated in the previous edition, along with elevation to the high-profile status comes high responsibility and accountability. To whom much is given, much is required, yea, even demanded, both by God and men.

As any parent knows, children commonly deny, lie, and obfuscate when they are caught in a blatant act of disobedience and deception. Though it may sound to some harsh to say, such a response is a characteristic of either immaturity or guilt.

I think it is telling that demons do the same thing. When they are first being discovered, identified, and called out, their first response is almost always denial and adamant defensiveness. That’s why people with addictions, compulsions, and obsessions, often live in “denial,” and are the last person to realize and recognize it is beyond their control—because it is unclean spirits that are behind and driving the addiction, compulsion, or obsession. Demons always first deny they are there. Many times they have actually responded to my calling them out by saying, “No, we are not in (the person)!” I usually can’t help busting up laughing when they do that. The host often first denies they are there as well.

Denial of this sort is a form of lying. Inherent in Jesus’ calling Satan “the father of all lies” is that he is the chief denier. Lying is denying; denying is lying. All liars are deniers. Pathological liars, of whom Satan is the master and original, always deny that they are lying, in other words, they lie about lying. But what makes them pathological is that they actually BELIEVE their lies. for that reason, pathological liars can often pass a lie-detector test with flying colors. Pathological liars can sound and seem so convincing, and make you doubt your own discernment and sanity. They also are good at making you feel that your audacity in questioning their credibility is beyond all credibility, and attempt to put you on the defensive.

In no way am I saying that those questioned in the Grassley Investigation are pathological liars but I am saying that indignant denials of all wrongdoing, vociferous defending of themselves and their ministry operations, angry denunciation of their inquisitors, and pledges to stonewall, is not a response that is going to quell suspicion or be conducive to exoneration. The correct response to such a probe for those who have nothing to hide should be full cooperation and forthright answers. If no laws have been broken and no moral or ethical violations have been committed, then why should there be a concern about answering the inquiry truthfully and forthrightly? Makes one think of the quip of Queen Gertrude in Hamlet, “The lady doth protest too much, me thinks.”

Years ago, a reporter called to ask if she could interview my wife and I concerning the business we had that had enjoyed some moderate success and as a result gained some notoriety in the relatively small we lived in. She said the theme of the story is how serving God can produce success in business. We agreed, and when she came she proceeded to tell her story about how she had recently been Born Again and renounced Satan’s kingdom as an advanced witch, and been delivered from the kingdom of darkness. As a result of that she also left her job as a reporter with a secular paper, and she had recently been hired by a new upstart paper in the area. She had heard about our business “success story” and wanted to write about it.

I assumed it would be a small blurb on the last page of some edition they needed filler for. Instead, to our utter shock, it was a six-week front page feature series in the next edition. That was great, we thought, and it was, but the next week’s “letters to the editor” section was filled with negative naysaying from critics lambasting the reporter for writing the article, the editor for printing it, and us for our statements about the premise of Biblical prosperity and success. One grumbler commenting on our picture they published, calling us the “Christian Ken and Barbie.” I howled laughing at that one! But, as PR agents say, “There’s no such thing as bad press, as long as they spell your name right.” New customers came in telling us they had read the articles and had to come in to see what all the hub-bub was about.

What a “coincidence” it was that later that year we received a letter from the IRS saying our business was being audited based on some anonymous “tips.” With my accounting and business administration background, I kept the business’ books but worked with a CPA for validation and tax preparation. As a meticulous record-keeper I inundated the auditing agents with receipts and records for every transaction down to every pencil we bought. My initial response was indignation and outrage because I knew in my spirit it was a result of that series of articles. But, after praying and asking the Lord for guidance, I told the IRS agent, she had my full and complete cooperation, and I would do all I possibly could to provide every ounce of information available to me, because I knew I had absolutely nothing to hide. I also could not resist telling her that the Lord had assured me in prayer, that I would in the end be totally and completely vindicated, and she and the IRS would have to apologize for such a groundless and unnecessary investigation and invasion and into our lives.

We lived with a cloud of aspersions over our heads that no one can generate like the IRS for FIVE long years! But, it ended with the IRS Magistrate saying with tears in her eyes, “Mr. Lambert, we apologize for what we have put you through over these last five years. The results of the audit are that not only do you not owe the IRS any money, but that we owe you money for deductions to which you were entitled but you did not take. I have here a check for the amount of refund you are entitled to, and please accept my apology on behalf of the IRS.” The check was not a large amount, but the vindication after five years of suspicion and innuendo was invaluable! The Lord assured us that the audit was no “coincidence” and the anonymous tipsters were a few envious and devious agnostics as well as possible competitors.

Nevertheless, the point is, if you have nothing to hide and everything is on the up and up, an audit or probe such as the Congress’ of a few high-profile ministries should be no problem at all, but merely an opportunity to demonstrate conclusively to the public that nothing improper is going on, and thereby clear their name and the collective reputation of the myriad of other ministries legitimately operating in this nation to fulfill the Great Commission and Jesus’ charge to “occupy” or “do business” until He returns. Why the angry and defensive public reactions and responses?

Is it intrusive? Yes, it is, somewhat, but it’s also a great opportunity for the innocent to prove their innocence.

Is there a line somewhere regarding the intrusiveness of government into the matters of the church in a free nation such as ours? Of course there is, but I don’t see this investigation as approaching that line.

Does this inquiry portend of an evil conspiracy by government to abate religious freedoms and negate privacy rights of religious organizations on a large scale. I don’t think there’s any credible evidence of that inherent in this probe. I believe Senator Grassley and his committee are simply following up on the legitimate concerns addressed to them from a number of Americans. I see nothing sinister here.

Regardless, I don’t see a response of angry public denouncements, obstinate refusals to cooperate, defensiveness, and obfuscation as being the “right response,” nor the response of the Spirit. Christians, and especially Christian leaders, should be the standard-bearers of uprightness.

I’m also always further suspicious of those who have been accused of wrongdoing who defend themselves by citing a laundry list of all the “good” they and their organizations have done, inferring that somehow all the “good” they have done should negate or balance out any “bad” that may or may not be taking place. Some people apparently actually believe that God “grades on the curve” or “the average system.” Will somebody please inform me where that is in the Bible?

On the contrary, what IS in the Bible is a poignant and sobering premise such as that expressed through one of God’s most powerfully anointed no-nonsense prophets of all the so-called “Major Prophets” of old, Ezekiel, in which He made it clear that someone’s “good” deeds do not negate or balance out that person’s sinful deeds:

“Again, when a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and I place an obstacle before him, he will die; since you have not warned him, he shall die in his sin, AND HIS RIGHTEOUS DEEDS WHICH HE HAS DONE SHALL NOT BE REMEMBERED; but his blood I will require at your hand.” (Ezk. 3:20).

The prophecy is recited almost verbatim later in the same book, with this addition: “All his righteous deeds which he has done will not be remembered for his TREACHERY which he has committed and his SIN which he has committed; for THEM he shall die” (Ezk. 18:20).

Isaiah said it about as straightforwardly and unequivocally as it could be said when he said that all our righteousness or so-called “good works” are as “filthy rags” unto the Lord (Isa. 64:6). Satan is identified as “the accuser of (the) brethren” (Rev. 12:10). He is God’s prosecuting attorney. The fact is, whenever the accuser starts accusing us of wrongdoing, there is almost always some semblance of truth to the charges, if nothing more than in our flesh. Even Satan is not so stupid as the prosecuting attorney to levy charges against us that he knows have no foundation in fact whatsoever. Anyone who has the unmitigated audacity to start enumerating all their good works before God in the face of charges of wrongdoing has only exponentially increased his/her wrongdoing and definitely is on the wrong track.

Indignant and defensive denial of the charges the accuser of the brethren levies against us is not the right path to justification. The only way to receive the justification Jesus, the Christ, purchased on the Cross, and have our debt stamped “Paid In Full,” is to admit it, own up to it, then not seek pardon on the basis of our own righteousness, but on the basis of His and the propitiatory sacrifice He died to provide. For, “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Cor. 5:21). It’s not our righteousness that justifies us, but Jesus’ righteousness. In fact, we have none of our own: “There is NONE righteous, not even ONE” (Rom. 3:10).

Indignant denial is the wrong response when the accuser of the brethren accuses us. Jesus was the only human who ever lived who was completely innocent down to the very core of His being of all charges made against Him, and during His trial, He was the Lamb led to the slaughter who answered not a word in His defense, even though Scripture says lying false witnesses rose up against Him. He did not respond with indignant defensiveness, but rather let God be both His Defense Attorney and Judge.

Why does God sometimes allow us to be put on trial by accusations from Satan? Because, as David learned, “Behold, You (God) desire truth in the INNERMOST BEING, And in the HIDDEN PART You will make me know wisdom” (Psa. 51:6). “The spirit of man is the lamp of the LORD, Searching all the INNERMOST PARTS OF HIS BEING” (Prv. 20:7). God is after far more in His sanctifying dealings with us than only external appearances of piety. He DESIRES TRUTH IN THE INNERMOST BEING. As a man thinketh in his heart, so IS he—especially to God. God knows every thought of our hearts. God wants to purify us down to the very core of our being—our attitudes. An outward appearance of piety that is not a reflection of genuine inward holiness is the very definition of HYPOCRISY.

God absolutely despises hypocrisy. Jesus’ vehement righteous indignation, castigation, and denunciation of the Pharisees and the Sadduccees who were utterly possessed with hypocrisy reflected God’s utter contempt for hypocrisy and hypocrites. Behind all hypocrisy is a defiling and diabolical religious spirit that emanates from Satan himself. Satan is the master-religionist. Nothing is more defiling and diabolical than religious spirits because religiosity, i.e., false outward piety, is the very nature of Satan himself. Religious spirits are counterfeits of the Holy Spirit. Religious spirits are murdering spirits. They are the real hidden culprits behind all the hatred of false religion that makes people murder people or commit spiritual murder, that is hatred or contempt of your brother: “Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him” (1 Jn. 3:15). The false face of religion, of which Satan himself is the author, is the ultimate source of all hatred, contention, strife, divisiveness, and murder that exists in the world today.

How all this relates to the scrutiny into which the Grassley Investigation is bringing a few prominent Charismatic ministries is reflected in the contextual verses of the First John passages just quoted:

Do not be surprised, brethren, if the world hates you. We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death. Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer; and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him? Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth. We will know by this that we are of the truth, and will assure our heart before Him in whatever our heart condemns us; for God is greater than our heart and knows all things. Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; and whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight. This is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us. The one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us. (1 Jn. 3:13-24)

But, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 Jn. 1:9). The only kind of sin or wrongdoing that can be forgiven and pardoned is CONFESSED sin or wrongdoing. I would urge every minister and ministry in the days of Spirit-compelled circumspection that are now upon us, in which God is purifying the sons of Levi [church leaders] (Mal. 3:1-3) and testing the building materials of every ministry (1 Cor. 3:10-15), not to be so quick to resist and deny the accusations of the enemy out-of-hand without sincere self-examination to determine if there is any semblance of truth in the spirit realm to the prosecuting attorney’s charges. If there is, consider it a merciful and gracious purging by the Spirit. If not, no harm, no foul.

Let a man regard us in this manner, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. In this case, moreover, it is required of stewards that one be found trustworthy. But to me it is a very small thing that I may be examined by you, or by any human court; in fact, I do not even examine myself. For I am conscious of nothing against myself, yet I am not by this acquitted; but the one who examines me is the Lord. Therefore do not go on passing judgment before the time, but wait until the Lord comes who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of men’s hearts; and then each man’s praise will come to him from God. (1 Cor. 4:1-5)

The Lord is coming to the Church these days and bringing to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclosing the motives of men’s hearts. The sad and unfortunate indictment against the Church is that He is having to use worldly means and mediums such as public probes like the Grassley investigation to bring forth His judgment that must begin with the household of God, i.e., the Church. Instead of cursing the accusers, the proper response is to “in all things give thanks,” and “Rejoice, and again I say rejoice, and let your forbearing spirit be known to all men.” And,

Jesus warned Peter, “Simon, Simon, Satan has demanded permission (from God) to sift you like wheat” (Lk. 22:31). I’ m sure Peter had the same thought occur to him that does to us when we find ourselves in a “fiery trial” authored by the Adversary—why didn’t Jesus merely pray for him and foil the plot of Satan that He foresaw in the Spirit. But, the truth was that He couldn’t, because as He stated to Peter, Satan had “demanded permission” from God to sift him. God’s prosecuting attorney demanded to try Peter because there were some defiling things hidden in Peter’s “hidden parts” or “innermost being” that gave “the accuser of the brethren” legal right to bring him up on charges and sift like wheat. Sifting is a purging process to separate the grain (the usable part) from the chaff (the unusable part). What Jesus foresaw was a “fiery trial” that was necessary for Peter’s purging of the fear, faithlessness, treachery, and self-centeredness that was hidden in his heart and was spiritually defiling him. But, Satan and all the fiery trials he authors in our lives, are only tool in the hands of God.

If we will respond properly to the purging process of the Spirit, which is by humbling ourselves, admitting our faults, and allow godly sorrow to produce genuine repentance in us (1 Cor. 7:11), then we, like Peter, receive genuine pardon and exoneration of the Spirit. Instead of praying to remove the trial that was coming, which would have only foiled the purposes of God, Jesus told Peter, “but I have prayed for you, and when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.”

Instead of praying for removal of the fiery trial, Jesus prayed for and prophesied something of far greater value—Peter’s repentance—and then charged him to strengthen his fellow believers with the empowerment he gained as a result of the purging process after he had “turned” or repented. And, in the end, Peter did precisely what Jesus prayed and prophesied, for that very reason—because He prayed and prophesied it—which is precisely what especially prophetic believers must learn to do with their fellows.

Self-examination, godly sorrow, repentance of revealed sinful attitudes, and graciousness toward our human accusers is the only right response to accusations of wrongdoing that have some basis of truth to them at some level, whatever that level may be. On a personal basis, as long as we are trying to resist the accusations of the accuser of the brethren by defending ourselves and declaring our goodness, he has legal right to continue to accuse, prosecute, and judge us. Jesus admonished, “Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison” (Mat. 5:25). Peter made it clear our ultimate adversary is the devil, Satan (1 Pet. 5:8). As long as we are denying the charges Satan makes against us, we are in a prison of one sort or another. If we agree with the charges of the adversary QUICKLY, confess our sins, seek forgiveness, and repent, then we will receive the full pardon Christ provided through His sacrifice and be released from the prison cell in which we’ve been confined.

In the next posts, I will be addressing what I see as being the real causes and spiritual context behind such matters as the Grassley Investigation, and convey some prophetic revelations about other workings of the Spirit in the purification and perfecting of the Church.

Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved (or, passed the test, margin), he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. (Jas. 1:2-4; 12)

The U.S. Senate Finance Committee has recently begun a probe into the financial practices of some religious organizations claiming Non-Profit Tax-exempt status under federal laws. Senator Charles Grassley, the Committee’s ranking Republican member, as part of the larger probe, has launched an investigation of six of the nation’s most prominent charismatic ministries: Benny Hinn, Kenneth and Gloria Copeland, David and Joyce Meyer; Randy and Paula White; Creflo and Taffi Dollar; and Eddie Long.

The Iowa lawmaker, who spearheaded past whistle-blowing crusades of secular non-profits such as the American Red Cross, based on citizen complaints received by his office, sent letters to these six organizations demanding they provide him within a few weeks various types of audited financial records documenting lavish purchases, extraordinary expenditures, and inordinate compensation amounts, among other financial activity, along with governing board meeting minutes authorizing them. In the letters released this past Tuesday the Senator indicated his purpose was to verify the ministries’ compliance with U.S. tax laws. Among his requisitions were:

  • Documentation of the financial transactions of Benny Hinn Ministries’ purchase of his $3 million home in California;
  • Accounts of Eddie Long’s purchase of his $1.4 million, sprawling 20-acre estate outside Atlanta;
  • A receipt for Tampa-based television preacher Paula White’s reported gift of a Bentley convertible to celebrity pastor, T.D. Jakes;
  • Records delineating the source of funding for posh furnishings in iconic Bible teacher Joyce Meyer’s Missouri headquarters—including a $30,000 malachite table, a $23,000 marble top commode, and a $19,000 pair of Dresden vases;
  • Explanation of Pacific island vacation trips by Kenneth and Gloria Copeland using a plane purportedly owned by their ministry;
  • Clarification of high-profile Atlanta faith preacher Creflo Dollar’s role in raising a major portion of a $2 million donation to his mentor, Kenneth Copeland.

A top associate speaking on behalf of Grassley reportedly indicated the senator has no hidden agenda, and is not conspiring to deny anybody of religious freedom, but that he is seeking assurance that these six organizations are not misusing charitable contributions to pay for mansions, plastic surgeries, and other lavish perks. “The Christian public should have demanded a higher level of accountability a long time ago.”

This public probe comes on the heels of a rash of scandals in 2007 involving high-profile church leaders and TV-evangelists, the latest of which is allegations of financial mismanagement and other misconduct by ORU president, Richard Roberts, forcing his resignation and the bifurcation of ORU from Oral Roberts Evangelistic Association, which has been its parent organization since its founding. These along with the many other well-publicized disgraces involving well-known preachers, clergy, and church officials over the last few decades have produced an at least partially deserved blight upon modern Christendom. Per usual, the improper conduct of an errant few has disgraced the whole Body of Christ, and in the eyes of the world tarnished the service of thousands of upright, law-abiding, modestly-living, and modestly-compensated ministers in this country, who daily carry out their typically selfless and sacrificial servitude in relative obscurity and little recognition.

The view I have held privately for years going back to the days of the widely-publicized Jim Bakker and Jimmy Swaggart debacles is that while the world and worldly-minded Christians judge such rogue preachers on the premise of financial malfeasance, moral failures, and their sundry legal violations, God Himself is judging many prominent ministries against a much loftier standard, having to do with attitudes of ascendancy and elitism manifest in their blatant lack of compassion and benevolence toward the thousands of other, lesser-known ministries in this country whose missions and ministry endeavors are no less worthy of financial support than their own. Few of the “mega-ministries” that began emerging in the 1950s and ’60s have shown significant desire to “share the wealth” with other worthy ministries. When they have contributed to other ministry organizations, often a major part of their motivation is to curry some sort of favor and/or reciprocation from the receiving minister and/or his/her ministry organization. What makes this the height of hypocrisy is that these are the same well-known and well-healed ministers who constantly, and in some cases obsessively, demand sacrificial benevolence of their supporters toward their own coffers.

Personally, I believe that from the Divine perspective, ministries who have been afforded a prominence and platform that enables them to draw millions of dollars in annual contributions—and there are now scores upon scores of them in our nation—bear a responsibility, if not a Divine requirement, to help other ministries who are just as dedicated and devoted to the calling and ministry mission they’ve been given by God as those mega-ministries. Frequently and shamefully, however, the leaders of the mega-ministries become as arrogant and haughty as the mega-moguls of the world, hoarding, or in some cases, squandering their burgeoning treasuries on the further expansion of their own private kingdoms and the aggrandizement of their ministerial monarchs. Moreover, instead of having a sense of corporate responsibility toward other members of the Body of Christ, in direct contradiction of Scripture, they adopt the mindsets of the corporate world wherein they regard other ministries as competitors and mortal enemies. It is just an unfortunate and shameful fact that precious few of the mega-ministries and mega-churches regularly donate any substantial amount of the scores or hundreds of millions of annual income to help other ministries other than the obligatory “missionary” ministries or projects in some way related to their ministry or denomination, which often is motivated more by the PR benefits than genuine benevolence. Exceptions do exist, but they are relatively rare.

A Stricter Judgment!

The Holy Spirit makes it clear in Scripture that spiritual leaders “incur a stricter judgment” by God (Jas. 3:1), and that to whom much is given, much is required, and to whom much is entrusted, much is demanded both by God and men (Lk. 12:48; cf., NAS, AB, KJV). Nevertheless, in every age there are those like “Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them” (3 Jn. 1:9), who push and shove their way through the sheepfold in ambition-driven ascension to ascendancy and the accoutrements it affords. Unfortunately, self-aggrandizing charlatans do exist, and are always among us—tares sown amidst the wheat, wolves in sheep’s clothing—”who suppose that godliness is a means of gain” (1 Tim. 6:5). In fact, the Holy Spirit through the prophetic pen of the Apostle Paul warned that the times in the last days would become laden with severe difficulty resulting first and foremost from of a pervasion among humans of rank narcissism and self-aggrandizement:

But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these. (2 Tim. 3:1-5)

Notice that every one of these ungodly, carnal traits Prophet Paul delineated are rooted in self-centeredness and self-love. The very first two traits he named as being culpable for the “difficult” or “perilous” times that would prevail in the last days is that mankind would be “lovers of self” and “lovers of money,” followed by boastfulness and arrogance, two other leading markers of self-centeredness. Such an apostate spiritual atmosphere for the end-times as the Spirit describes should not be surprising to students of biblical sociology and eschatology, but what is often surprising to the average Christian is that the end-times church, following the lead of self-absorbed leaders, will be swept up into this perfidious prevailing wind of worldliness propelled by the ultimate idolatry of gross narcissism, with which the “millennium generation” is so thoroughly permeated.

Both the Apostle Peter and Jude through indignation-charged inspiration of the Spirit directed some of the most stinging and utter rebuke in all of the Bible toward this ilk of false prophets and false teachers that existed in every Church age and yet captivates massive portions of the current Church by means of corrupted charisma. Peter wrote:

But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. Many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of the truth will be maligned; and in their greed they will exploit you with false words; their judgment from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep. (2 Pet. 2:1-3)

…enticing unstable souls, having a heart trained in greed, accursed children; forsaking the right way, they have gone astray, having followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness; but he received a rebuke for his own transgression, for a mute donkey, speaking with a voice of a man, restrained the madness of the prophet. These are springs without water and mists driven by a storm, for whom the black darkness has been reserved. For speaking out arrogant words of vanity they entice by fleshly desires, by sensuality, those who barely escape from the ones who live in error, promising them freedom while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by what a man is overcome, by this he is enslaved. (2 Pet. 2:14-19)

Jude’s entire Epistle is a divine-diversion from his intended topic and -diatribe against unscrupulous counterfeit ministers, messengers of Satan transformed as angels of light:

For certain persons have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ…. Yet in the same way these men, also by dreaming, defile the flesh, and reject authority, and revile angelic majesties….But these men revile the things which they do not understand; and the things which they know by instinct, like unreasoning animals, by these things they are destroyed. Woe to them! For they have gone the way of Cain, and for pay they have rushed headlong into the error of Balaam, and perished in the rebellion of Korah. These are the men who are hidden reefs in your love feasts when they feast with you without fear, caring for themselves; clouds without water, carried along by winds; autumn trees without fruit, doubly dead, uprooted; wild waves of the sea, casting up their own shame like foam; wandering stars, for whom the black darkness has been reserved forever….But you, beloved, ought to remember the words that were spoken beforehand by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, that they were saying to you, “In the last time there will be mockers, following after their own ungodly lusts.” These are the ones who cause divisions, worldly-minded, devoid of the Spirit. (Jude 4-19, excerpts)

But, what a rude awakening is coming, and is indeed just on the horizon for today’s lukewarm Laodicean church. There is a shaking that is coming in which EVERYTHING that can be shaken will be, and every mountain and hill (human kingdoms and dynasties) shall be made low, and every valley shall be lifted up or exalted, and the rough ground shall be made a plain, and the rugged terrain, a valley (Isa. 40:3-5). It shall be a fierce day of accounting and reckoning, a day when God sets up His scales and weighs against His holy standard the works of the ministries he finds at work when He returns. Indeed, it shall be on that day when Jesus’ prediction, “many who are first will be last; and the last first” (Mat. 19:30), shall have some of its greatest application to this ilk of church leader who has been corrupted by the love of money and prostituted himself and his ministry in pursuit of a purely monetary “prosperity” and financially-measured “success.”

I remind you that nearly two-thousand years ago the Spirit expressly warned, “THE TIME IS COME that judgment MUST BEGIN at the house of God” (1 Pet. 4:17, KJV). If the time had come then, how much closer are we to it today? And, notice that God’s judgment MUST begin with God’s household, meaning the church, the betrothed to Christ, who Christ will return to claim as his Eternal Bride. That Day of Judgment of the house of God has been fast approaching for many years, and I believe shall begin to suddenly take place in the year ahead, 2008. The suddenness of it shall catch many unawares and overtake them like a thief in the night. “In one day,” many covetous Christian leaders shall begin to inherit judgment from God in various forms that shall result in major reversals in their ministries, and many shall lose the fortunes they have amassed from the tithes and offerings they have extruded, and in some cases extorted, from the hard-earned money of hard-working and sacrificially-giving donors, and along with it the excessively luxurious lifestyles to which some of them have become accustomed and reliant.

Coming Soon: Day of Reckoning!

A “Day Of Reckoning” is surely coming to many irresponsible and unscrupulous ministries. I believe we are about to see a fulfillment of the Prophet Malachi’s prophecy in the Church that will begin with the leaders (Levites, “sons of Levi”):

Behold, I am going to send My messenger, and he will clear the way before Me And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple; and the messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight, behold, He is coming,” says the LORD of hosts. “But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap. “He will sit as a smelter and purifier of silver, and He will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, so that they may present to the LORD offerings in righteousness. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the LORD as in the days of old and as in former years. Then I will draw near to you for judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers and against the adulterers and against those who swear falsely, and against those who oppress the wage earner in his wages, the widow and the orphan, and those who turn aside the alien and do not fear Me,” says the LORD of hosts.

I will be devoting a series of forthcoming posts to what I believe the Lord is speaking regarding the sundry matters raised in this article. But, the paramount point here is that it is a shameful indictment on the modern church, as well as on purporting neo-prophets that a Senator’s spokesman has to be the spokesman God uses to issue the prophetic rebuke concerning the excesses found in some portions of the Neo-Pentecostal Church, “The Christian public should have demanded a higher level of accountability a long time ago.”

May God in His mercy forgive us, and send us true prophets like the selfless and uncompromised prophets of old pronouncing a penetrating “Thus saith the Lord” no matter the cost, in contrast to the plethora of selfishly-ambitious and self-aggrandizing profiteers of today promising personal wealth, health, and happiness through the latest revolutionary self-help discovery or program!

Release and Sending of True Prophets

There is no question in my mind that beginning in 2008, God is going to call forth many John-The- Baptist-type prophets to be voices crying out in the wilderness to make straight the way of the Lord, proclaiming piercing prophetic messages that will penetrate the lukewarmness and complacency, and in some cases the apostasy, presently pervading the Church at-large. Their central theme will be the same as that of the original John-The-Baptist and Jesus Himself — the first word of the Gospel — “Repent! For the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!”

God will soon send unto the Church those prophetic voices it so desperately needs! Fearless and fierce deliverers of the Spirit sent by God with a mandate to upset the idols men have set up, to call into line all who have gotten out of line, to bring down what humanism has built up, to destruct what idolatry has constructed, to root up what vain human philosophy has planted in the minds of men, to overcome the complacency, apathy, and pacifism that has come over the Saints of God. These prophets, when they are released from their holes and caves, deserts and wildernesses, will not come promoting and pimping for a corrupted, counterfeit “prophetic movement” for their own selfish-gain, but will come as servants and sacrificially employ the anointing of their office to build and plant the Church Jesus is building and planting (Jer. 1:10; Is. 61:1-3).

Beware of the false prophets, who come to you wearing sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are self-serving wolves with ravenous appetites of every kind of lust and avarice. You will know them by their fruit, not their prophetic gifts (cf., Mat. 7:15,16).

Send us, O God, those true prophets Leonard Ravenhill envisioned who know no compromise, have no price tag, cannot be bought out or bought off; who daily breathe the rarified air of divine inspiration; who march to a different drumbeat; seers sent to lead the blind; those that are unabashedly forthright, unashamedly outright, having lives that are upright, but who claim no birthright; dwellers in splendid isolation in the natural realm, yet in the heights of God in the spirit realm; firebrands possessed with passion, purpose, and pugnacity of the Spirit; sent-ones sent into the valleys of spiritual malaise and waywardness with a heart-piercing, conscience-pricking, “Thus saith the Lord!” God, send us, true prophets!
